Redesigning and Relaunching the Most Downloaded Weather App
In a deep and relentlessly collaborative process, Makeable partnered with top Weather Channel executives to co-lead an agile client/agency team tasked to reimagine, redesign, and relaunch the world’s most popular and most downloaded weather app––in record time. With a tight timetable and massive requirements from both stakeholder and data perspectives, we changed the model and catalyzed disruptive innovation for a large organization and their flagship product––from process, to product, to delivery.
More than a Facelift, it's a Weather Feed
A new strategy required understanding the current users of the app, as well as the needs of potential users. The Weather Channel already had the best data in the world, so how could they possibly make it better? For starters, there is so much more to weather than the daily forecast. Getting the most detailed, accurate and timely information is essential. The Weather Channel’s reimagined app experience is a direct reflection of the demand for a bigger, more robust and easy to absorb story of weather, all in the mobile friendly, digestible, feed style UI we all use today.
Social Weather and You
The Social Weather component offers a new aspect to weather forecasting by allowing every user the ability to report their own personal geo-located weather conditions and display them in real time as they happen. Crowdsourced weather makes for even more accurate data. And the weather affects every aspect of our lives, so why not include our lives in the weather app? New weather modules are tailored to target specific activities or lifestyles, enabling users to look at weather in ways that have never been possible before. Love to ski? There’s a module for you.
Our relentlessly collaborative process lead to 23 individual Moodboards, 12 UX models and 2 functional prototypes on our way to the final product you see in the App Store today. Above are just a few samples resulting from our work with The Weather Channel.
